Charter

This endorsement is required to operate a charter-type bus when transporting school children grades 12 and under on any type of school trip. To receive this endorsement, applicants must pass a written test. The test consists of 20 multiple choice questions. To pass, the applicant must answer at least 16 questions correctly. Test questions come from the Illinois Commercial Driver’s License Study Guide. Questions come from chapters covering: Passengers and School buses. The Charter endorsement may be used with the Class A, B or C CDL.

15. If a tornado is approaching and the bus is evacuated, where should students go?

To a nearby building

To the closest tree

Near a river

To a mountain

If students are evacuated due to a school bus being in the direct path of a sighted tornado, the driver should lead them to shelter in a nearby building. If no such shelter is available, the driver should escort them to a nearby ditch or culvert. They should avoid areas that may be subject to flash flooding and should be far enough from the bus that it would not fall on them if it tipped over.

16. If you must back up at a student pick-up point, you should:

Back up before the students board the bus.

Let the students board the bus and then back up.

Let half the students board the bus and then back up toward the other half of the students.

Tell the students to wait at the stop and then back toward the stop.

If you must back up a school bus at a student pick-up point, be sure to pick up all students before you begin backing up. When backing, it is especially important to keep an eye out for latecomers.

17. While the vehicle is in operation, emergency exits should be:

Locked.

Unlocked.

Loose.

Open.

Any emergency door should be unlocked, but securely latched, while a vehicle is in motion.

18. Why should a school bus stop a short distance from students who are waiting to board?

The students will have to walk to the bus, making it easier for the driver to watch their movements.

The students will usually be waiting on a sidewalk.

The students may get scared of a school bus coming toward them.

Buses are difficult to drive.

When being stopped to load students, a school bus should stop at least 10 feet away from the waiting students. This forces the students to walk toward the bus, making it easier for the driver to keep track of their movements.

19. A school bus stop:

Can be added by the driver if there is a need.

Should be voted on by the students.

May change, depending on weather conditions.

Should be established by the proper school district authorities.

A school bus driver should not alter the location of a bus stop without written authorization of the appropriate school district officials.
