Knowledge Test Class B

This license is required for driving a single vehicle with a GVWR of more than 26,001 pounds, and a trailer not to exceed 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating, or a vehicle designed to transport 24 or more people (including the driver). To receive this license, applicants must pass a 50-question test. To pass, applicants must answer 40 questions correctly. Each question has three possible answer choices. Test questions come from the Idaho Commercial Driver’s License Manual. Questions come from chapters covering: Introduction, Driving Safely, Transporting Cargo Safely, Air Brakes (if applicable), Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection Test, Basic Vehicle Control Skills Test and On-Road Driving.. Endorsements that may be used with a Class B CDL are: Hazardous materials, Tank, Passenger, HazMat and Tank, Air Brakes and School bus.

1. During the vehicle inspection test, you will be asked to:

Change a tire.

Explain to the examiner what you are inspecting and why.

Estimate the weight of a load on a trailer.

During the vehicle inspection test, you will be asked to do a complete inspection of your vehicle. You will need to explain what you are inspecting and why.

2. During a pre-trip inspection, belts should be:

Loosened.

Checked for tightness.

Scrubbed clean.

Left alone and not inspected.

When inspecting your vehicle, you should check all belts for tightness and excessive wear. You should learn how much "give" is appropriate for each belt.

3. Do not base your decision to shift gears on:

The speed of your engine (rpm).

The speed of the road (mph).

The actions of the vehicle next to you.

One way to know when it is time to shift gears is to learn your vehicle's operating rpm range. You should shift up when your engine reaches the top of that range. You can also learn which speeds each gear is good for and shift up based on your speedometer.

4. If you must back up, it is helpful to:

Drive as fast as possible to complete the maneuver quickly.

First walk the line of travel to look for obstacles.

Use only the passenger side mirror.

If you must back up, you should exit the cab and check your path for obstacles before beginning the maneuver. Drive as slowly as you can, checking your mirrors on both sides.

5. When loading a trailer, it is important to:

Place as little weight as possible over the axles.

Place an appropriate amount of weight over the axles.

Not be concerned with how the cargo's weight is distributed.

When loading cargo, it is important that the weight placed on each axle is neither too little nor too much. Inappropriate loading can interfere with steering, create inadequate wheel traction, or damage the axles.

6. During a basic vehicle control skills test, a look is when:

A driver checks the gauges on their instrument panel.

A driver checks their blind spots.

A driver walks to the back of their vehicle to check its position.

A driver uses a look when they open their door, leave their seated position, and walk to the back of the vehicle to check its position. During the straight line backing exercise, a driver may not exceed one look. During any other exercise, a driver may not exceed two looks.

7. When approaching a vehicle for a pre-trip inspection, a driver should look under the vehicle:

To see if the vehicle is on an incline.

To see if there are any fresh fluids on the ground.

To see if the vehicle is in a parking spot.

When approaching your vehicle before an inspection, make note of its general condition and ensure that it is not damaged or leaning. Look under the vehicle for fresh leaks of oil, grease, or fuel. Check around the vehicle for hazards to movement, such as people, other vehicles, or low-hanging wires or tree limbs.
