This endorsement is required for driving a vehicle with air brakes. To receive this endorsement, applicants must pass a written test. The test consists of 25 multiple choice questions. Each question has four answer choices. To pass, the applicant must answer at least 20 questions correctly. Test questions come from the North Dakota Commercial Driver Guide. Questions come from the chapter covering: Air Brakes. The Air Brakes endorsement may be used with the Class A, B or C CDL.

19. Truck tractors with air brakes that were built on or after March 1, 1997 are equipped with:

An extra set of brakes.

Voice-activated brakes.

Cruise control.

Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS).

Truck tractors with air brakes that were manufactured on or after March 1, 1997 are required to be equipped with Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS). ABS is required in any other type of vehicle with air brakes that was manufactured on or after March 1, 1998.

20. Vehicles with dual air brake systems:

Have air pressure in the braking system even when the vehicle is not running.

Maintain some air pressure in the braking system when the vehicle is not running.

Must be run to build air pressure to allow the brakes to operate properly.

Maintain air pressure when shut off for periods of less than four hours.

Before driving a vehicle with a dual air brake system, allow time for the air compressor to build up pressure of at least 100 psi in both the primary and secondary systems.

21. In a vehicle with dual air brakes, what happens if one system is low on pressure?

The air from the other system will be used to supplement the system with the low pressure.

The front or rear brakes may not work properly.

All brakes will be inoperable.

The low system will use an auxiliary system to fill the tank.

In a dual air brake system, if one of the air systems gets very low on pressure, either the front or rear brakes will not be operating fully. You should bring your vehicle to a safe stop and have the air system repaired.

With some exceptions, you must have a tank endorsement to transport liquids or gases. This applies to both hazardous and non-hazardous substances.

Drum brakes are attached to the wheels and located on the axles of a vehicle. The braking mechanisms that cause the vehicle to stop can be found inside of a drum brake.

24. Air tank drains:

Are helpful to remove water and oil from the air tanks.

Are used to move air to the brakes.

Clean the air in the passenger compartment.

In an air brake system, air tanks have drains to remove accumulations of water and compressor oil. Allowing water and oil to accumulate in the system could cause damage to the brakes. Manually operated drains should be used daily.

25. If the spring brakes are activated, you should never:

Push down the brake pedal.

Open the hood.

Release air from the air storage tanks.

Open the door to the cab.

Never apply the brake pedal if your spring breaks are activated. Brakes can be damaged if they are subject to both springs and air pressure.
