All applicants who are applying for a Class A CDL should be prepared to take the Combination test. This test covers information found in Section 6 of the Commercial Driver License Manual. Section 6 provides the information needed to safely operate tractor-trailers, doubles, triples, and straight trucks with trailers. The test is made up of 20 multiple-choice questions, and applicants will need to correctly answer a minimum of 16 questions to pass. The Combination test is not a replacement for the Double/Triple endorsement test.

15. To lower the risk of a rollover, you should:

Load the cargo as far forward as possible.

Load the cargo as far back as possible.

Load the cargo as low as possible.

Stack the cargo as high as possible.

To lower the risk of a rollover, load your cargo as closely to the ground as possible. To further reduce this risk, take curves and corners slowly.

16. When the wheels of a trailer lock up:

The trailer will stay straight.

The trailer tends to swing around.

The cab will swing, but the trailer will stay straight.

They will likely go flat.

A trailer may swing out and strike other vehicles if its wheels lock up. This is especially likely with lightly-loaded trailers.

17. Fully-loaded rigs:

Are less likely to roll over than empty rigs.

Are more likely to roll over than empty rigs.

Are just as likely to roll over as empty rigs.

Should not be driven.

Because the weight of cargo gives them a higher center of gravity, fully-loaded rigs are 10 times more likely to roll over in a crash than empty rigs.

18. When backing a trailer, how should you turn the steering wheel?

Turn the top of the steering wheel in the direction you want the trailer to go.

Turn the top of the steering wheel in the direction opposite of where you want the trailer to go.

It depends on where the trailer is being backed.

When backing with a trailer, turn the top of the steering wheel in the direction opposite of where you want to go. Once the trailer begins turning, you should then switch the direction of the steering wheel to follow the trailer.

Supplies air to the trailer air tanks.

Prevents skids.

The emergency air line (also known as the supply line) has two functions. The first is to supply air to the trailer air tanks on a combination vehicle, and the second is to control the emergency brakes.
